After successful completion of the course, students will be able to feel confident in these core competencies:
Medical Terminology
Demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of phlebotomy theory, including anatomy, physiology, and medical terminology related to blood collection.
The Art of Phlebotomy
Perform venipuncture and capillary puncture procedures safely and accurately using appropriate techniques and equipment.
Infection Prevention
Adhere to infection control, safety guidelines, and standard precautions in compliance with regulatory and ethical standards.
Communication and Customer Service
Communicate effectively with patients and healthcare team members, demonstrating professionalism and patient care skills.
PH100: Introduction to Phlebotomy & Ethics — 10 Theory Hours
Covers phlebotomy basics, scope of practice, and blood collection procedures. Includes legal and ethical responsibilities like HIPAA, consent, and professional conduct.
PH102: Anatomy & Physiology — 10 Theory Hours
Focuses on anatomy and physiology related to phlebotomy, including circulatory systems, veins, arteries, blood components, medical terminology, and patient response.
PH103: Specimen Collection & Handling — 17 Theory, 29 Lab
Covers venipuncture, capillary draws, pre-analytic factors, complications, special populations, arterial draws, non-blood samples, specimen processing, and point-of-care testing.
PH104: Special Collections — 10 Theory, 8 Lab
Introduces quality controls, delta checks, and pre-analytical variables, plus legal issues like scope of practice, liability, malpractice, and confidentiality.
PH105: Lab Practicum — 14 Lab Hours
Hands-on practice of venipuncture, capillary sticks, specimen processing, and documentation. Conducted onsite in the lab to meet certification skill requirements.
